About Cayman Islands

About Cayman Islands: The Cayman Islands are located in the western Caribbean Sea, south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica.

The Cayman Islands are located in the western Caribbean Sea, south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica. This British Overseas Territory is an offshore financial center and a significant tourist destination, known for its pristine beaches and marine life. The islands tend to attract a mix of luxury travelers, scuba divers, and those working in the financial sector. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is cooler and less humid. The islands are generally considered an expensive destination, with costs for accommodation, dining, and activities often higher than in many other Caribbean nations. Inter-island travel is primarily by air, with Cayman Airways operating flights between Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. On Grand Cayman, taxis are readily available, especially around tourist areas and the airport. Ride-sharing apps are not common here. For local transport within George Town and other settlements, public mini-buses offer a more economical option. Rental cars are common for independent exploration. The official currency is the Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD), which is pegged to the US Dollar at 1 KYD = 1.25 USD. US Dollars are widely accepted. Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including most restaurants, shops, and hotels. Cash is useful for smaller purchases or local vendors. Tipping is customary; 15-20% is typical for good service in restaurants, and generally expected for taxi drivers and other service personnel. For connectivity, local SIM cards are easily available from providers like Flow and Digicel. eSIMs are also supported by these carriers, offering convenience for short-term visitors. Driving is on the left side of the road, and visitors can use their home country's driver's license for up to six months. Roads are generally well-maintained. The main language spoken in the Cayman Islands is English, and visitors will find no communication barriers. The islands are generally very safe, with a low crime rate, though standard precautions against petty theft should always be observed, especially in tourist areas. The tap water is safe to drink throughout the islands, as it is desalinated and treated. Business hours typically run from 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday, for most offices and banks. Shops generally have similar hours but often open on Saturdays. Sunday closures are common for many establishments outside of tourist-focused areas. There are no particular unique customs or widespread scams that new arrivals need to be especially cautious of. The main weather extremes to be aware of include the hurricane season, which runs from June to November. While direct hits are rare, tropical storms can bring heavy rain and strong winds during this period. The electrical outlets are Type A and Type B, operating on 120V and 60Hz.
